Playing This Weekend: Halo 3, Lumines

Despite my original plans, I wound up playing a TON of Halo this weekend. Multiplayer is exactly like in Halo 2 except that the competition is clearly better organized. Your opponents seem to be better matched and closer to your skill level making games closer and more enjoyable. Also, a majority of the players are not annoying little kids screaming in your ear. Hurray for that.

Co-op seems... easy. I also find that it takes a lot away from the story when you have friends chattering away in your ear how are you supposed to follow what's going on. Even worse, co-op lags a lot. You can tell that this game was not designed to be co-op and that it was just added in to make players happy. Gears of War is a game designed with co-op play in mind.

Finally, I've continued to play Lumines on my PSP. This game is a great time killer and would be perfect to waste time while on the go. Easily one of the obvious must haves for PSP owners.

Playing Today: Lumines, Stranglehold

Two new games, two very different but enjoyable experiences. I purchased the original Lumines for my PSP and the experience was as good as I expected. The gameplay is fun and intricate without scaring me off. It is a variation of Tetris yet much more than that. I can understand why this was one of the first big hits on PSP and why it has been drafted onto several different platforms since. I predict years of fun to be had for years to come.

Tried out Stranglehold and had a bad taste in my mouth at first. The jumping mechanic was way too loose and I didn't think I could adjust. However, given some time I figured out the language of gameplay and adjusted my style to match the game. While level design is very linear and fighting is generic, I'm still enjoying the experience enough to push on. The graphics look like they were designed for an original XBOX and the voice acting has some issues. I'll have to really play on to really grasp the overall scope of things.

Playing Today: BioShock, Eternal Sonata, Pac-Man Championship Edition

BioShock continues to be the big game on my brain. Despite visions of Halo co-op dancing in my brain, BioShock is the game I really want to invest my free time. Despite my hopes for Eternal Sonata, BioShock is closest to my heart. Having just fought my first group of Big Daddies, I know what true love is. Having found my camera, I know what true gameplay is.

Eternal Sonata is a let down so far. The game is GORGEOUS. The voice acting is something else. I could only play about two hours before I realized that I'd rather be playing BioShock. Perhaps I will pick this up again in the Winter.

Playing Today: BioShock and Geon

I love Geon. This game is a mixture of Marble Blast Ultra, Pac-Man, and a bowl of awesome. The graphics are crisp, the gameplay is tight, and the multiplayer is picture perfect. This is a wonderful example of the potential built into XBLA and a perfect casual game. Bravo XBOX for releasing such an wondrous game.

BioShock has re-appeared in my box. I haven't played in nearly a week and I almost forgot how to play. I'm still way behind on my progress and have just now saved my first little girl. The chills and the thrills are non-stop and I can see why the reviews are so incredibly strong. This is a perfect example of great videogame storytelling.

Playing Today: Punch-Out!!

I think I forgot to mention that I purchased Punch-Out!! for the Wii the other day. Beating this game has always been something I've aspired to do and now I have my chance. The controls and graphics are picture perfect. Now I just need to memorize the different strategies for the bosses and slug away. Wish me luck!

Playing Today: Resident Evil 4, Space Giraffe, A Link to the Past, The Darkness

I spent most of time with Resident Evil 4 (Wii). This game continues to entertain and spook (although it doesn't scare). I've become accustomed to the controls and the only gripes I currently have, I have mentioned before. With about 90 minutes played I'm pleased.

I picked up A Link to the Past (GBA) for my Nintendo DS today. The same amazing game I played on the SNES years ago is just as much fun on DS. I find that the D-Pad feels a bit less responsive in this version but that has nothing to do with the game itself. That is what I get for playing a game on a different system from the original. I've only played about 20 minutes, so, I haven't seen a lot of the old stuff.

The Darkness online is fun - if you can find a lag free game. I played a bunch today and enjoyed it through some laginess. If I don't send it back this week I'll try to get into less lag-filled matches. It reminds me a lot of Prey.

Space Giraffe is fun. That is all.

Playing This Weekend: Resident Evil 4, Space Giraffe

Spent some good time with Resident Evil 4 (Wii) this morning and I am continuing to enjoy it. The graphics are obviously subpar but the story and game play are entertaining. The game play has its share of flaws but nothing that will have you tossing away your Wii-mote. The zombies aren't easy to kill and it took several opportunities for me to take them down. So far, the levels are somewhat linear and I really hope that they open up a bit.

I played more Space Giraffe and figured out that I was using the A button incorrectly. Perhaps this screw up might help me progress past the tenth level. Perhaps.

Playing Today: BioShock

I'm now into my second play session of BioShock and I'm starting to see what everyone was so excited about. There are a ton of cool surprises to be found, wonderful voice acting, and fascinating puzzles. The hack puzzles are a fun game in and of themselves. I like having mini-games I'm not required to do but I want to do them.

One aspect that I haven't encountered enough to fairly assess is the rebirth process. I haven't died enough to figure out if this game just doesn't kill you or if you are limited to a certain number of rebirths per level. And, thematically, if I die in a level who puts me in the Rebirth Chamber (or whatever that isobaric chamber is called) so I can live again, Angels?

An Open Letter to Microsoft

Microsoft,

Your Interactive Entertainment Business division is floundering. Specifically, two areas are obviously in need of a major re-haul. First, your initial XBOX 360 hardware is fundamentally flawed. Secondly, your support services are under-staffed, under-educated, and insufficient for the amount of traffic they are receiving. To fix these problems I offer you three solutions: recall, relaunch, or red ring. These three solutions can be implemented individually or collectively. Hell, for all the general public knows, you may already be implementing these changes. If that's the case, all we ask for is more transparency.

RECALL. The XBOX 360 hardware launched was flawed. Every owner of a XBOX 360 sold at launch is guaranteed a broken console. To make matters worse, every owner of a refurbished XBOX 360 is guaranteed another broken console. We know this not because you've admitted this problem but because of the preponderance of evidence. If the Internet is used as a trustworthy source of information and compare the amount of broken XBOX 360 claims to those of every other current console on the market, it is apparent that the XBOX 360 owns the market of hardware failure. If your own corporate admittance as the basis of this argument, Peter Moore's (former Corporate Vice President of Interactive Entertainment) three year warranty extension should suit just fine. Logic indicates that making such a drastic financial sacrifice for your customers is an open admittance of failure. Unfortunately, this program is not enough.

One solution is officially recalling all affected (infected) consoles. No one outside of Microsoft corporate knows how many XBOX 360s will initially fail (8 million? 10 million?) and that number will increase even higher if you calculate the number of broken refurbished consoles. Instead of slowing down customers by forcing them to call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX, a separate recall would sacrifice short term financial and public relations momentum for long term customer satisfaction. If you want to create your own recall department to handle the bulk of these issues that would assist. Allow consumers to send back their broken (or soon to be broken) consoles when they are ready and show some skin instead of hiding in your trench coat. It's not as if you're running an illegal dogfighting ring.

RELAUNCH. Instead of a full-fledged recall, you could just completely relaunch their console. After the holiday season, perhaps in January and February, you'd halt all new XBOX 360 shipments. Clear all remaining inventory, stockpile redesigned (and functioning consoles), and tell the world that the XBOX 360 will be coming back soon. Tell software manufacturers that they can still sell their games except that new consumers won't be able to buy new consoles. In fact, if implemented fast enough, this plan could be used to spike console sales for the holiday. Drop prices $100 just to clear the shelves and parents will have no reason to sit back and disappoint their video game starved kids.

You might be wondering why a relaunch will work? Three recent examples provide evidence that a relaunch can help revitalize your presence and broaden your audience. The release of the DS Lite, the PSP 2000, and the PlayStation Slim all pushed slowing console sales back to where they need to be. In fact, the PSP 2000 might just save the lagging console from irrelevancy. Find a new game (GTA IV?) or peripheral (HD DVD) to bundle with the system, price it competitively and show the world that they can be confident with a functioning console. With a relaunch you'll lose a bit of ground short term, however, you will be better off in the long run. Your momentum should pick up with superior software and you'll have much happier customers.

RED RING. The failure of your warranty extension is hampered by slow service response, poor customer service, and the overwhelming number of broken consoles. Your customer service department either needs to be complete nuked or expanded extensively. Instead of removing all of your current agents, how about creating a division that only deals with red ring failures? If a consumer sees the red ring, they can call 1-800-RED-RING and speak with an agent about sending back their console. Eliminate the obnoxious computer agent and send customers straight to a team of representatives that only deal with the red ring. This will lighten the load of your other support agents so that they can deal with all of the other (less rampant) issues with the XBOX 360.

At this point it is apparent to everyone that things aren't getting better any time soon. This fact is even more troublesome because the greatness of your software is obvious. Gamers want to play BioShock, HALO 3, Dead Rising (still), and Gears of War. Nintendo apparently hates adult gamers and Sony is too busy trying to sell BluRay to the world. You, Microsoft, needs to step up to the plate now and make further changes. You need to make these changes soon and make them public. You already have an excellent grasp of community and some wonderful PR mouthpieces to utilize. Your faithful fans are losing their patience and it will only take one great game to change the tide.

Hopefully and yet jadedly yours,

Alex

Playing Today: DDR Universe, Space Giraffe

"Welcome back," my XBOX says. "Where have you been?"

The question should be, "where have you been oh broken console?"

Finally Microsoft brought back my gaming console and I had plenty of catching up to do. You'd think that BioShock would grab my attention first. You sir, or madam, are wrong. In fact, I plugged in DDR Universe first. After finding this game way underpriced at EB Games I dove right back in enjoyed some ultra-nerdy glee. Oh boy is this game a ball of fun. If only Katamari had dancing. Seriously, I now fully understand why this game became huge. I also understand why people play this game hidden away in a closet somewhere. Figuratively.

I also tried out Space Giraffe. I thought that Geometry Wars was the heir apparent to the 1980s arcade classics. Space Giraffe is making a serious assault on retro games and has my attention. This game is trippy, obnoxious, bizarre, confusing, and loves to give me points for... who knows what. Just give me points and I'll love the game, apparently. Fun game and well worth $5.

Hopefully, I will invest 60 minutes into BioShock tomorrow. For such great hype it deserves a visit.

Playing Today: Excite Truck

Yup. I feel like I'm on sabbatical or something. With my XBOX 360 out to repair and having only 360 games from GameFly, I am stuck in a quandary. Send back the games and never get BioShock from GameFly ever again? Or let the games sit there all alone waiting to kick ass in my 360.

I have been playing a dash of Excite Truck and it is slowly growing on me. In no way is it a $50 game. It is, however, a wonderful system seller. Like Wii Sports, Excite Truck is a glorified tech demo that can suck in the amateur gamers. It is easy enough to win but hard enough to master. A few more days and we'll see where I stand.

I watched some kids play Boogie. No thanks.

Playing Today: Pirates of the Caribbean

I'm officially done with Pirates and I don't mean that in a good way. When playing games there are moments that make you sit up a decided whether or not the game is pure crap or gold. This happened on the last level of this game when I had to play the same stage 20-100 times. On repeated play, the gameplay fails consistently. Enemy AI is practically un-evolved (enemies walking in predetermined patterns would be more modern) and holds back the progression of the game. Objectives in this level are either undetermined, vague, or ignored. And to make matters worse I cannot find an adequate FAQ anywhere on the 'net. Apparently, I must be the first person to make it this far in the game.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (for the PSP) is a cheap game that never should have been made and is one of the greatest wastes of plastic since Limp Bizkit CDs. Curse you poor game designers you don't know how much harm you've really done.

Playing Today: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Wii Sports

Another day without an XBOX. Another day of Pirates. This game so far is a breeze. Just invest about 30 minutes per level and you'll be through in no time. I can't say that I hate that because if you're going to make a crappy licensed game at least make it quick. Remind me what the movie is about and keep it moving. I did find some strange continuity issues where I am mid-fight and the game skips to a cut scene. It's almost as if the game is rewarding me with progress just for investing my time. Odd.

I played some more Wii Sports and progressed further in Baseball. The game does get a little bit harder and pitching to the computer AI is so erratic. It kind of weakens the overall feel of the game. Not a lot, just a smidgen.

Playing This Weekend: Resident Evil 4, Wii Sports, Pirates of the Caribbead: At World's End

My XBOX is officially dead. It boots up and freezes at the XBOX ball. Oh well, now to send this sick puppy back to its maker. In the meantime my Wii has gotten some action.

I spent some time (5-10 minutes) with Resident Evil 4. I like the controls so far and the story is only slightly hokey. Hopefully, Sunday will get a ton of playtime.

I played Wii Sports Baseball and owned the easy computer. I've had lead of home runs three games in a row and forced the mercy rule consistently. This game is fun in multiplayer mode but really suffers because it lacks depth. Three innings is the max that I can play? Why put such a strange limitation on?

Finally, I started playing Pirates on my PSP again. The voiceover really sounds like Johnny Depp. Too bad that Orlando Bloom definitely didn't participate. So far this game is a simple hack'n slash, much like 300 was.

Playing Today: Forza Motorsport 2

I let the computer do some further racing on Forza Motorsport 2. I went and saw a movie. I bought Resident Evil 4 for the Wii. I will play it.

;) Best Post Ever!

Playing Today: Sonic the Hedgehog, Forza Motorsport 2, Bomberman Live

Finally, I have taken down Dr. Robotnik and won the original Sonic the Hedgehog. It only took me a couple games but I've finally mastered this final boss. Sonic hasn't aged perfectly but this game is still fun and challenging. Overall this game rates a B.

I picked up Forza Motorsport 2 and am aiming push forward until I have to send my XBOX back. I won my first race without hiring a drive in quite some time. I dropped all the way down to 8th place thanks to some crashing but still made my way back up.

Playing Today: Beautiful Katamari, Sonic the Hedgehog

The new Katamari Demo arrived the other day and it's pretty good stuff. The gameplay is identical to the other Katamari games and the control is tight. The highlight of this demo was the graphics. Katamari was always a pretty game but seeing it in vivid HD was quite a sight. Fans of the original should be pleased. One problem I foresee in Katamari's future is the limited freshness this game might have. If the gameplay stays the same the only thing you could really add is new levels. Will that be enough to justify a new game every year?

I'm almost through the original Sonic but I'm stuck on the final boss. I can't believe they shaft me with zero rings. Perhaps 50 more tries and I'll save the rest of the fuzzy bunnies.

Finally, some sad news. My XBOX 360 is having issues and is returning to Microsoft for repairs. I guess I'm stuck with my DS & PSP for the short term. Whimper.

Playing Today: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, BioShock

I wrapped up Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver this morning. Ultimately, this game has average control (which is better than many movie games), problematic voiceover and dialogue, ridiculously heavy-handed product placement, simplistic enemy AI, and limited game time. I enjoyed the gameplay more than that of Spider-Man 3 and on par with the robot portions of Transformers. I can't imagine if this game were much longer what new things they could find. I did, however, enjoy the puzzle solving stuff in the Terrax levels. It was good variety even if the puzzles weren't impossibly hard. Grade for this game is an easy C.

Played 15 minutes of the new BioShock demo. This game reminds me of Condemned a lot. I'm sure as the sci-fi comes out of the woodwork the differences will be apparent. For now this game is living up to the hype and might steal a bunch of Halo 3's thunder.

Playing This Weekend: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Crackdown, Dead Rising

Played a handful of Fantastic Four this weekend. The game has grown me a bit but it is still plagued by glitches, camera issues, and repetitive gameplay. The voiceovers are still piss poor and the graphics leave a lot to be desire. However, none of these problems are game breakers. For now the game is simply best seen as a time kill. If you're looking for fun and innovation try something different.

I spent more time with some classic games but nothing new was really discovered. Okay, maybe one thing - co-op in Crackdown is quite the frustration. If both dudes don't have identical downloads the game halts. And even worse, the data transfer time is almost unbearable. Good luck Halo 3.

Playing This Weekend: Alien Hominid HD, Forza Motorsport 2, Dead Rising, Pac-Man Championship Edition, Sonic the Hedgehog, Command & Conquer 3

Alien Hominid doesn't just have a great single player mode it has some excellent mini games. Somehow I have become obsessed with playing Super Soviet Missile Mastar. The achievement for this mini game is designed to be incredibly hard despite the mini game's utter simplicity. I'm merely 14km away from 5000km and I just can't seem to get it. How can such a simple game be so... insanely addictive?

I plugged away at Dead Rising, Sonic the Hedgehog, Pac-Man Championship Edition, Forza Motorsport 2, and Bomberman Live. Nothing new to report except that these games are still incredibly good.

I tried out Command & Conquer 3. It reminded me a lot of Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-Earth II - probably because both games are made by EA. I bet if I really wanted to invest the time into this game I'd enjoy it as much as I enjoyed LOTR. Too bad I see other games on my horizon and I just don't have 40 hours to re-invest for a RTS.

Playing Today: Bomberman Live, Sonic the Hedgehog, Dead Rising

Sonic the Hedgehog is proof that achievements can breathe new life into games that aren't exactly new. Having just officially paid for Sonic I decided to attempt one of the timed achievements. Now, if I were playing this on the Sega Genesis, why would I care how long it took for me to win level one? It wasn't as if I had a leaderboard to compare my time with friends. Because of achievements I spent an extra thirty minutes just trying to beat this level in under 35 seconds. And how frustrating is it that beating the level at 35 seconds still doesn't count. Score a 34 second victory or go home. This was quite an accomplishment (and although frustrating at times) for me and quite fun.

I played some more Bomberman Live and hopefully I'll get to play some more online games soon. I also tested out the two new arcade games but they didn't blow me away. Maybe I can get back to them later in the week.

Finally, I've picked up Dead Rising again to attempt some of those achievements that were just out of reach. I'll get these, hell or high water!

Playing Today: Transformers, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

I pushed through more of the Autobots portion of Transformers. The controls can be a bit frustrating but still much better than Spider-Man 3. I'm kind of curious to see if playing as the Decepticons will abandon the stereotypical mission style of the Autobots. Why would the bad guys need to follow... rules? (I found one pretty nasty glitch that let me slip into a wall and then I was stuck.)

Fantastic Four arrived yesterday and it was decent. The graphics are creepy - you should see their crotches. The voices are pretty bad so far and obviously not the real cast. However, the inclusion of co-op might make the experience a bit more bearable. This game might be better than the movie it was based on.

Monday, July 30, 2007

Playing Today: Transformers, Bomberman Live, Pac-Man Championship Edition, The Bigs

I took some time away from Transformers to finish up my first season of The Bigs. The playoffs were tougher than the regular season; however, I was still able to crack a ton of homers and pitch my first perfect game. I took down the Detroit Tigers for my first ring and hope to earn the same ring with an American League team in the future - maybe not too soon. Overall, this game lived up to my highest expectations and has only minor flaws (like mispronunciation) and a soundtrack that is light on music. I gladly give this game an A. I can't wait for next year!

Some more achievements were earned in Bomberman Live and Pac-Man Championship Edition. Both continue to stand out as the best XBLA games of the year and should be held up on a pedestal with Geometry Wars.

Finally, I spent some more quality time with Transformers. I love that that the environments are destructible. This was a feature I wasn't expecting to see and makes playing as a Transformer very cathartic. Too bad that the driving controls are atrocious. The driving portions feel identical to those in Full Auto. Is this the same engine? I'll have to do further investigating.

Playing This Week: Bomberman Live, The Bigs, WTF, Gauntlet, Transformers, Mega Man Powered Up, Blitz: The League

Wow. I have no excuse for missing a week's worth of blogs. I'll definitely try to fix that, don't you worry. I tried out Blitz: The League and was underwhelmed. It felt like one of those games that deserved more of my time - but The Bigs just kept sucking me back in. So, I sent Blitz back and am at the World Series of the The Bigs.

I also tried WTF (Work Time Fun) on my PSP. Again, this was an interesting game; however, not a game I could see myself owning or playing half as much as my other PSP games. After twenty minutes that found its way to the mailbox too.

Transformers showed up a few days back and I surprisingly enjoyed it. The environments are almost completely destructible and the narration is cool. My only issue so far (and I'm only one hour in) is the mission structure. The missions are video game cliches: race missions, protect missions, and fighting. That's cool for kids and quick playing but not likely to provide that great of an experience.

I finally defeated Mega Man Powered Up and was satisfied with that experience. I really hope that Capcom makes a sequel or takes this version to XBLA. Look for more Transformers commentary this weekend!

Playing Today: The Bigs, Pac-Man Championship Edition, Bomberman Live, Yie Ar Kung-Fu

Another day, another 33 run game. Holy crap, The Bigs was tons of fun to play. Scoring 33 runs, knocking out 8 triples, and 7 RBIs for my rookie was a blast. This helped me rack up three new Achievements in the same game! Despite that this game is relatively easy (on this difficulty) it is still fun because not every game is a blow out. I played the Cardinals and had several close calls. I can see myself investing many more hours in this game and enjoying a majority of them.

I tried out the new (classic) Bomberman game. I only played the demo and was intrigued, but not enough to drop $10. This looks like plenty of fun but the new additions and customizations are a bit obnoxious. Maybe after I buy the game I'll change my mind.

Played a ton of Pac-Man and really figured out Extra Mode 2. The more I play the more I can't stop playing. When the initial reviews compared this to Geometry Wars, I was skeptical. However, now I am a believer.

I tried the other new arcade game, Yie Ar Kung-Fu. I remember seeing this years ago... and I still have no interest.

Playing Today: DDR Universe, Sonic the Hedgehog, Pac-Man Championship Edition, Mega Man Powered Up, Gears of War, Burnout Revenge

Sorry about the delay in blogging. Vacation took away from my overall gaming but I was still able to play some new (to me) games. I played DDR Universe and Sonic the Hedgehog (next gen). DDR was surprisingly fun. I didn't expect to hate it completely and that's what I got. It plays like Guitar Hero (duh) and the music was better than expected. I might invest more than 20 minutes in the future but only in the privacy of my home.

My time spent with Sonic the Hedgehog was less worthwhile. I played for about 5 minutes and quickly sent it back. I didn't like the excessive cut scene at the beginning (despite how beautiful it looked) and had no interest in 3D Sonic. Not sure why I even tried this.

I'm still playing Mega Man but I seem to have hit a wall on the final boss battle. The smaller bosses were all fun to battle and I quite enjoy the game's save point system. However, if I can't progress much in the next few weeks, I guess I'll retire it.

Playing Today: Bullet Witch, The Bigs, Sonic the Hedgehog

Bullet Witch came in the mail yesterday. I was surprised at how above average the game was. This is in no way the stinker that some reviews led me to believe. The premise is ridiculous, the enemies are laughable (walnut head?!), and the protagonist is a bit strange. However, the gameplay works just fine (for now) and the graphics are decent. And, although, the story is strange, I found myself intrigued by the campiness of it all. Hopefully, I'll get some more time with it before I go to the beach.

Sonic the Hedgehog just arrived on XBLA. The game looks exactly how I remembered and functions as it should. I like the inclusion of leaderboards but I'll never play it long enough to earn that high of a score. I only tried the demo but am seriously considering purchasing it this week or next. I didn't get to try Golden Axe.

As far as E3 goes, I might draft something after it is all over and done with. Might.

Playing Today: Mega Man Powered Up, Spider-Man 3

First impressions go a long way with me. Mega Man Powered Up left quite a first impression, filling the portable void that Loco Roco had claimed for several weeks. This game is really fun, playful, silly, and still very much Mega Man. Instead of grinding away at the same bosses over and over until I beat them, the difficulty system lets me explore the game without suffering from frustration I remember. The voicework is great for a portable title and the art style is way above average. I can see this stuck in my PSP for weeks to come.

Spider-Man 3 is still an exercise in frustration. The camera is still broken and the gameplay is not remotely entertaining. I can imagine that most gamers would have returned this by now...

Playing Today: Spider-Man 3, The Bigs

Oh boy is Spider-Man 3 turning into a mixed bag. I really am enjoying the size of NYC. I like how I can seemingly traverse incredible distances without any loading screens. All until you have a boss battle way underground in a box about 10 feet by 20. Kraven is obnoxious and hearing the same four lines of dialogue over and over is saddening. Why do game makers let this kind of stuff pass? Do they realize that this does nothing but make their games seem disposable and unloved? And just as annoying - I can't save the game where I want to. I fought Kraven for 30 minutes, finally beating him, but I could not save because I now have to fight Lizard. Seriously, the saving of games has existed for at least 20 years now - get with the times.

I tried playing The Bigs on medium difficultly and had quite a different experience. Gone are the 15-0 games. The ramped up difficulty I don't mind... for this game. Playing on easy difficulty is a fun option that lets me play through without hours of less fun gameplay. After a play through, if I really like the game, I'll play it on Medium. Quite a good game and well worth a purchase.

Playing Today: Spider-Man 3

Played several games today but all were repeats not worth delving into. The only "new" game I played today was Spider-Man 3. I played this game months ago and have picked it up again because I need a new review and this is all I have. The game took me a minute or two to get reaccustomed to. I forgot the controls and the combos. Nevertheless, with those memories back in place I began to remember why I stopping playing this game: awful camera, jumpy buttons, and horrible voice acting. I guess it is kind of fun playing as Spidey, but not in this game. They stole the sandbox game type from much better games and went completely half-assed on the work. This game is similar to Superman Returns in that you really want to like it because of the characters involved but you want to hate it because of the piss-poor job of the developers. I'd rather have a cell shaded side scroller (like Alien Hominid) than another GTA clone. Still, I'll keep on playing because I have to finish it up for review.

Playing Today: The Bigs, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

Another day with The Bigs and plenty more fun. This game is great fun but I'm starting to worry that it will be short lived. If I beat the rookie challenge will it unlock a real season mode with stats? If not, why not?! And, this game really needs some downloadable content. How about a second pinball arena? This is a great game but not perfect.

I picked up Pirates (still on my PSP) again for about 10 minutes. I don't like that I can't just save anywhere, it is kind of annoying. Still, I haven't delved in deep enough to really feel challenged. This game kind of reminds me of 300. Kind of.

Spidey tomorrow? Maybe.

Maybe.

Playing Today: Loco Roco, The Bigs, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

It is about time, right? Two new games played today and one game finished. Finally, Loco Roco is complete and I can still say it is the best game I've played on the PSP. In fact, it is one of the best games I've played ever. This bizarre platform-style game is easy to play and fun to explore. It is reminiscent of Mario Brother but without that silly Bowser guy. Having completed the game I can officially grade it an A.

I picked up The Bigs today and it was a worthwhile purchase. Basically, this is the NFL Blitz version of baseball. Only a few of the big name players are missing and the baseball parks are incredibly well designed. Some of the fielding and base-running is frustrating but maybe I just need to give it more time. And that I will.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End arrived in the mail today for my PSP. This looks a lot like the Pirates game I played on the DS but the controls seem better. The voicework is above average and the actors are hard to differentiate from the real actors. This might wind up being an above average game.

Playing Today: Ratatouille, Cloning Clyde, Loco Roco

This past weekend was pretty quiet for gaming. Nothing new in the mail and I stuck with the regulars: Texas Hold 'Em, Guitar Hero II, Forza Motorsport 2, Alien Hominid HD, Wii Sports, and Loco Roco. I finally finished Guitar Hero II on Medium difficulty and survived some atrocious playing. Free Bird is pretty tough and gets harder as you get further into the game. I can't see playing that much further into the game unless I'm hanging out with a bunch of people. My final grade on Guitar Hero II is a B+.

Ratatouille appeared in the ol' mailbox yesterday. To say that this game is going to be frustrating is an understatement. The graphics are above average (and way better than Shrek the Third) but the control is already problematic. The animations are well made but the rat just doesn't respond as I would have hoped. And the tightrope walking isn't very much fun either. And these are my thoughts just on the first level.

Thanks to the new Play & Win contest I will be playing Cloning Clyde multiplayer for the next two weeks. I've already earned all of the achievements for Clyde so this will be just for the contest. The multiplayer is fun at a very simple level and shouldn't eat up too much of my time.

I smell the end of Loco Roco... any day now. :(

Playing Today: Alien Hominid HD, Wii Sports, Guitar Hero II

With my new found Easy Difficulty, I burned through the rest of Alien Hominid like it was a diarrhea-sufferers roll of toilet paper. I really love the art style and silly sense of humor at play in this game. They could easily adapt the game into an animated TV show (or just make a sequel). I'm especially psyched to see what is in store for Castle Crashers. Alien Hominid HD is one of the best XBLA games available and worth spending your well saved points and free time.

I spent some quality time with Guitar Hero II. So much so, while not blinking for about 7 minutes straight, my contact lens literally peeled off of my eye. My eye was so dry from not blinking that the lens curled up and attempted suicide. Weird. I survived Message in a Bottle on Medium and loved discovering War Pigs as an unlockable. Hopefully, I will get some more songs over and done with this evening.

Playing Today: Alien Hominid HD, Texas Hold 'Em, Dead Rising, Wii Sports

Just to keep things brief I won't be mentioning any of the repeat offenders today. My thoughts on Wii Sports, Dead Rising, and Texas Hold 'Em aren't bound to change, so why bother?

I spent so quality time playing Alien Hominid HD today and found a way to finally make some progress - change the difficulty. Playing on Medium Difficulty I was making the slowest progress and became annoyed by the see the same (awesome) scenery over and over. After switching to Easy Difficulty I've made quite a bit of progress and love the game even more now. Alien Hominid HD is easily one of the most titles XBLA has to offer and deserves a place in everyone's home. Anyone can play it but it takes a ton of practice to get good. And your alien avatar is so dern cute that you want a little plush doll. Ok, maybe just me.

Playing Today: Super Paper Mario, Texas Hold 'Em, Dead Rising, Wii Sports

Adding my first new game to blog in a while, I played Super Paper Mario. Too bad the game fell completely below my expectations. As I've matured as a gamer, I realize that I'm becoming more and more of a Tallarico than I might have thought. I cannot play a video game that requires me to read days worth of text. Games have moved from being a literal entertainment to an auditory one. I need to hear what characters are saying not just a collection of "Who-ahs" and "Wee-oop" to emphasize text. Nintendo needs to to suck it up and make there first party titles fully voiced. I think that New Super Mario Bros. may be the only new Mario game I've liked in years. I sent Super Paper Mario back partly due to the sound but also because the story and gameplay didn't seem as interesting and innovative as I had heard.

I'd rather get verbally assaulted by a Scottish dude on Texas Hold 'Em. I still took his money and gave him a dose of the right feedback. Hopefully, I won't ever see him again.

Dead Rising is still getting a ton of play as I hope to finish it within the next 17 months. Thankfully, Wii Sports never ends...

Playing Today: Texas Hold 'Em, Dead Rising, 300, Wii Sports, Loco Roco

Nothing new to really add today except that I've officially wrapped up playing 300: March to Glory. I failed to reach the ending but I figure my 80% completion total is good enough to support my upcoming review. Overall the game earns a B grade mostly due to the great voiceover and cool cut scenes. The gameplay and in-game graphics leave something to be desired and hopefully a new console version will take care of that.

Working through Dead Rising for what must be the tenth time now. I played through hoping to earn the 20 survivor achievement and was stuck with saving only 19 people. That is quite the frustration.

Time was spent with Wii Sports, Loco Roco, and Texas Hold 'Em and it really isn't worth going in depth.

Playing This Weekend: Loco Roco, Me and My Katamari, Dead Rising, Texas Hold 'Em, Guitar Hero II

I was on the road on Friday and was stuck playing quite a bit of Loco Roco. The difficult continues to creep higher, but never gets so hard that you can't progress. Now being at stage four (and with 4 hours played), I wonder how much longer this game could possibly be.

Dead Rising took up most of my console time today. I still need to go back and earn the Mega Man suit (technically, I already did) to get closer and closer to unlocking the full 1000 gamerscore. This might take a few months (or years).

And some minimal time was spent in Texas Hold 'Em, Me and My Katamari, and Guitar Hero II. Damn, Message in a Bottle was hard on Medium.

Playing Today: Texas Hold 'Em, Dead Rising, Band of Bugs

Band of Bugs was the only new game I picked up yesterday. I wasn't sucked in just yet but I can see curiosity grabbing hold in a month or so. This doesn't look to be as much fun as Cloning Clyde and probably isn't worth an immediate purchase.

Day three of the Texas Hold 'Em contest had me earning some nice fake cash. I placed second in a second tier tournament, which may be my highest finish so far. Drawing pocket aces is quite helpful (so is another player losing internet after he was in the final three).

Dead Rising has continued to be my game of choice (obsession). I'm just one face away from a full journal of characters. I'll have to wait another two days before I get to him, but it'll be worth the wait. Perhaps I'll just spend some time driving over Zombies. Heh.

Playing Today: Wii Sports, Texas Hold 'Em, Dead Rising

A lot of time was spent bowling last night. Too bad I've completely lost my skills. My high was maybe a 150. So, after months and months of playing, I'm probably worse than when I first started. Frustration.

One table of Texas Hold 'Em keeps the streak alive. I really wish that this game had video - it would make the experience more entertaining and perhaps would help my game even further. Maybe next month.

I opened up Dead Rising for the first time in a long time. I think I'm going to go back to the beginning a try to unlock the Mega Man suit. I can't believe that I screwed it up to begin with.

Playing Today: Wii Sports, Uno, Burnout Revenge, Texas Hold 'Em, Gears of War, Guitar Hero II

A nice mix of games over the past two days have kept my attention. I'm still playing Wii Sports, although, losing your bowling skills is quite a frustration. Perhaps I'll just earn a pro score and retire. I played a three inning baseball match and it was pretty cool seeing Rosie O'Donnell (Mii) hit quite a home run. Paris Hilton singled in the 6-0 victory, likely her first game without reaching third base.

A new XBL contest has me returning to Texas Hold 'Em after a hiatus. The contest requires an online multiplayer match per day and I can easily sacrifice 40 minutes for some poker. I wish they would implement the Live Video option, but I'm sure that isn't an easy task. Online play has been more realistic than when this game launched, so, I think a lot of the kid gamers have moved on...

...to games like Gears of War. I played quite a long match of Annex the other day. Annex is the newest gametype with a slew of new Achievements worth attempting. Too bad my first game was ruined by a host that bailed right before the match became official. Sure, it was fun to play the game, but the hosts early exit blanked all of our stats and ended up as a waste of time. Lame. Stunts like this, expensive new content, and glitchers have forced me to retire Gears of War. It has a great single (co-op) campaign and had a great multiplayer component. However, the time has come for me to leave it behind and wait for Gears 2.

I've played some quick games of Uno and I continue to have interest in the Kameo deck. For $1.25, this might be one of the best downloadable bargains on XBL. Hmm.

Played some more Guitar Hero II, mostly just amping up the difficulty of songs I already know. I'm not sure how I'll ever get to the Hard Difficulty and I'll probably bail on the game before then. I have this vision that Super Paper Mario is going to suck away my life soon.

Playing Today: Forza Motorsport 2, Wii Sports, 300

I keep forgetting to mention that I've been playing Wii Sports almost every day. Specifically, Wii Bowling has been on my daily dose. This is by far the best game available on the Wii and releasing it for free is one of the smartest thing that Nintendo has ever done. Nintendo knows how to build a brand from the ground up and by including a new product for free (Tetris, Mario, Duck Hunt), players a more likely to buy future iterations. Bowling is a perfect simulation and incredibly fun at the same time.

I played several hours worth of 300 and can see the end of the story on the horizon. The story is still great and the absurd decapitations of naked whores and midgets is so over the top, it is plain silly. Its as if the makers saw God of War and decided to blow the roof off.

Forza. Still great.

Playing Today: Forza Motorsport 2, Guitar Hero II, 300, Prince of Persia Classic

Prince of Persia Classic made its way to XBLA this morning. I spent about five minutes with the demo and it was quite the classic. The control is really screwy (like the original) and might turn a lot of younger gamers off. The CGI cut scene at the beginning was a cool touch and the lack of voiceover is understandable. I might need to give this a more thorough look-see.

I turned my PSP back on and spent some time on 300 again. This game is not made for the casual gamer and the bosses get really hard near the halfway point. Some of your deaths are downright frustrating, a vibe that some gamers enjoy. However, if I can't get past this point soon, I'm just going to hang it up and spend my time with something else.

I'm still working on perfecting Possum Kingdom on Guitar Hero II. A day or two more and I should have what I want. I played Jessica for the first time and its tough, but not impossible. I think that I just need to learn the tune.

Yes, more Forza.

Playing Today: Forza Motorsport 2, Ninety Nine Nights, Pac-Man Championship Edition, Uno

Ninety Nine Nights came in the mail today and I was completely sucked in. It is an okay distraction but nowhere near as good as the initial hype might have you believe. No wonder Microsoft was unable to gain traction in Japan with games like this. Instead of an original story or gameplay, you pretty much got more of the same. Maybe I just need to spend more time with it?

I also played my first game of Uno with the Kameo deck. I can see why Uno fans might enjoy playing with this deck and as premium content, it probably keeps the camera pervs away. I wouldn't pay for the deck but it was a worthwhile distraction.

Forza & Pac-Man demo continue to entertain.

Playing This Weekend: Forza Motorsport 2, Loco Roco, Shadow of the Colossus, Pac-Man Championship Edition

Not a lot of time for gaming this weekend, sorry. I played mostly Forza Motorsport 2. The game continues to entertain and suck away hours that should be better spent. Oh well. Same deal with Loco Roco. I've reached level three and the difficulty doesn't seem to have changed and the similarities to Super Mario continue to grow. This game is easily one of the most innovative 2D Platformers ever.

I spent about twenty minutes with Shadow of the Colossus. The into movie is really long and quiet, which is strange for a video game. Its almost as if they didn't make this game for 13 year olds. I haven't found a colossi, so giving a review just yet wouldn't be very fair.

And Pac-Man Championship Demo is still quite fun. Who knows, maybe I will buy it.

Playing Today: Forza Motorsport 2, Guitar Hero II, Fuzion Frenzy 2, Loco Roco

Nothing new played today, although I wrapped up one game (hopefully) forever. The majority of my play time was with Fuzion Frenzy 2. After several hours of play, I have all of the achievements and I don't think I'll ever play it again. The game isn't extremely difficult and can be fun in groups, but playing alone or online is frustrating. As many other reviewers have said, the card system is completely screwed up and should be optional. If I want last second cards to completely screw me over, that should be my choice. Fuzion Frenzy 2 is likely the last game in this series (please!) and will disappear into history as an awful follow-up to a mediocre game. Fuzion Frenzy gets a D+.

My time spent with Forza Motorsport was a lot of experimentation with hiring drivers and tooling around in the Auction House. Now with Fuzion Frenzy done, I expect to spend more time racing around and leveling up.

Guitar Hero II continues to give me a case of tendinitis. I tried out the Lefty Flip and decided... I'm very much right handed (at least when playing a plastic guitar). I've mastered Possum Kingdom on Medium and I have no idea how much time Expert players have invested in this game. I'd rather play Open Season than listen to Cheap Trick hundreds of times.

And, finally, more Loco Roco before I went to bed.

Playing Today: Forza Motorsport 2, Guitar Hero II, Fuzion Frenzy 2, Loco Roco, Grandia II, Pac-Man Championship Edition

A whole bunch of sequels have been in rotation this week. I finished up some achievements in Fuzion Frenzy 2 and I have one more left to go. This game is still absolutely redonkulous to play but once you've figured out some of the mini-games, the computer is pretty easy to beat. Soon enough I'll never have to play it again.

More time spent with Forza Motorsport 2. The graphics continue to amaze and staying on the track continues to frustrate. I was able to win a race with all of the assists of and while driving manual. Doing so took multiple tries but is fulfilling in the long run. Also, figuring out that you can hire a driver to win for you is a nice little bend-of-the-rules.

After a few days off, I picked up the axe and returned to Guitar Hero II. Possum Kingdom is like second nature now and I wasn't very far away from my first 100k performance. Too bad when I tried hard & expert I was annihilated. For now I'll stick with Easy & Medium.

I bought Grandia II used for the PlayStation 2. I loved this game on the Dreamcast but memories and video games tend to warp drastically. The dialogue is still corny and silly, but for some reason I remember the music being much better. Who knows if I will ever pick this game up again.

Loco Roco is still awesome and the new Pac-Man was better than expected. Although, I doubt I'll end up buying it.

Playing Today: Forza Motorsport 2

I've been hella busy moving into my new house. Fortunately I've had tons of games to keep me preoccupied while my cats carry in all of the furniture. While I've played Fuzion Frenzy 2, Guitar Hero II, Lumines II, Loco Roco, and Mad Tracks, Forza Motorsport is what has eaten up most of my time.

Forza is a stunning game. The cars are pretty, the menu interface is pristine, and the gameplay is near perfection. Even guys who don't like racing sims should give it a shot. The learning curve is not that bad and I enjoy this game a bit more than Project Gotham 3. I haven't played online yet and I'm sure it kicks ass too.

Thursday, May 31, 2007

Playing Today: Loco Roco, Fuzion Frenzy 2, Mad Tracks

I am moving to a house. Real quick. Mad Tracks is fun but not very deep. Loco Roco is lots and lots of silly fun. As good as Katamari and as simple as Mario. Fuzion Frenzy 2 is still frustrating.

Playing Today: 300, AstroPop, Loco Roco

I spent a lot of time with 300 yesterday. I still find myself having to go to GameFAQs for help. That's just fine because I know that eventually I would have figured the bosses out. I just didn't have four hours to spend. This game continues to grow on me.

I found Loco Roco at the ripe price of $10 yesterday. I also found Oddworld Stranger's Wrath for $5. I didn't play Oddworld because I don't have an XBOX, but my fingers are crossed for this game to be backwards compatible in the future. Loco Roco is silly fun and kind of like a side-scrolling version of Katamari.

Do I need to mention Astropop? I leveled up and earned a new achievement. Hurr-ay.

Playing Today: Shrek the Third, 300, Crackdown, AstroPop, Burnout Legends

On this extended holiday weekend I brought back Crackdown and played some of thew new content. The free content is pretty good but the paid content is now integrated into the gameplay. So, if you didn't pay for it, the game leaves the mission points as if you did. This is like putting pop-up ads in the middle of a video game.

Played more Shrek the Third, aiming to wrap up some of those achievements I haven't attained. The voiceovers are still awful and the gameplay is basic. I think that even little kids that liked the movie would hate this game.

The PSP joy that is 300 continues to grow. While the gameplay is simplistic and the enemies are repetitive, the bosses are no walk in the park. Some take 15 minutes just to lose to. I know what I'm supposed to do, but a mistake that I made 5 minutes in comes back to haunt me. Maybe I haven't played enough on the PSP, but 300 is worth a rental or a used price purchase.

My puzzle gaming was limited to AstroPop and I played Burnout Legends on the PSP for about 10 minutes. Both are great mental break games.

Playing Today: Shrek the Third, Tetris

Didn't play a whole lot yesterday. Just some Shrek the Third (wrapping up some achievements) and some Tetris on my cell phone. Not to worry, I'm sure I'll get to spend plenty more time with Spider-Man 3 this weekend. And Shrek the Third still sucks.

Wednesday, May 23, 2007

Playing Today: Shrek the Third

I bit the bullet and opened up the packaging of Shrek the Third today. Luckily, this game was free. The camera has issues. The jumping has issues. The graphics are nowhere near being next gen (aka current gen) and the voiceovers are unlistenable. The only noteworthy part of the game is John Cleese's narration. At this point I'll take Tobey Maguire's lazy work in Spider-Man 3 to the painfully bad voice dupes in Shrek the Third.

Playing Today: Spider-Man 3, Rayman's Raving Rabbids, Aegis Wing

I finished up the story mode of Rayman's Raving Rabbids. There isn't really much story to the game, but the minigames are silly enough that I had a good time playing it. Rayman is not as fun or funny as WarioWare, but is definitely worth a rental. Kids will enjoy the crazy rabbits and gamers will enjoy the sometimes difficult first person shooter levels. And everyone should enjoy the dancing rabbit sequences. Overall a B or B- game.

I'm still playing Spider-man 3. I've become more comfortable with the system of the game but I keep finding strange small quirks. If you stand on top a car (working on the Hitch Hiker Achievement) you'll see that cars drive through other cars. They also shift in strange directions and sometimes stop altogether. This game was not thoroughly quality tested and it shows. Did I mention the crappy graphics?

Aegis Wing is great when playing four player. Especially if your teammates are good and communicative. The final boss of Insane is a nail-biting experience worth every penny. And amazingly this game was free! Overall a B- game.

I played Ghost Rider on a PS2 for 10 minutes. It reminds me of God of War... A LOT.

Playing This Weekend: Halo 3 Beta, Spider-Man 3, Rayman's Raving Rabbids

I finally received Spider-Man 3 and Rayman's Raving Rabbids in the mail today. They are two completely different games and only of them is worth playing.

Spider-Man 3 is the poster child for crap games based on good licenses. Basically, the game is GTA III, Crackdown, and Superman Returns rolled into one. It takes places in the midst of NYC and spends a lot of effort encouraging vertical gameplay. Nothing is new here and a lot of the gameplay is flat out broken. The camera is super buggy and the swinging mechanics don't seem to have been tested. Fighting is even worse because there is no lock-on system to speak of. When fighting, often, you'll get stuck behind a tree or building because of a crappy combat system. The graphics are low grade, the music is repetitive and boring, and the voiceover work is unenthusiastic. This game is worse than games like TMNT and Cars because of how little the company cares.

Rayman is a collection of fun mini-games akin to those in WarioWare and other titles. I especially love the timing game that is similar to Guitar Hero, Parappa the Rappa, and DDR. The game goes by pretty quick, but it seems like tons of fun for kids and groups of people.

Playing Today: Halo 3 Beta, Fuzion Frenzy 2, Gears of War

Let's see, not a lot played today but enough Halo 3 Beta to start changing my mind. Fuzion Frenzy 2 saw about 12 seconds of action from me. Meanwhile, thanks to some friends, Gears of War was back in rotation. It took a second to re-readjust to the controls. Sniper felt natural but that shotgun still threw me off.

After spending more time with Halo 3 Beta, I've found some things I enjoy. The Assault Rifle is much more comfortable to me than the Battle Rifle. I'm still enjoying the Spiker (aka the Klobb of Halo), especially when double fisting. And Territories was really cool on the mountain level. Now if only I could mater turning with the Mongoose.

Coming soon in the mail, Spider-Man 3 and Shrek the Third!

Thursday, May 17, 2007

Playing Today: Halo 3 Beta, Fuzion Frenzy 2, 300

After a bit of a delay, I finally worked my way into the Halo 3 Beta. So far my impression is that this is Halo 2 with new menus, better capabilities (engine-wise), new maps and weapons, and a full-on video recorder. The video recorder is easily the most innovative part of the game and probably going to be the hardest feature to be copied. The most frustrating part of the game is overcoming months of Gears of War training. Because I was never great at Halo or Halo 2, I quickly adapted to Gears and now forgot all of the essential buttons in Halo. I'm still not sure how to change weapons. But that's just me.

I cracked open Fuzion Frenzy 2 and was surprised at how not-awful it was. Sure the voiceover is atrocious. But some of the minigames are a blast. I can't wait to get four people in the same room to play it. And best of all - it was free!

300 is still 300. However, my earlier comparison to Eragon is starting to fade away. This is (just a bit) better than Eragon. Hopefully, Spider-Man 3 will arrive soon.

Wednesday, May 16, 2007

Playing Today: PDZ, Fuzion Frenzy 2, 300, Aegis Wing

I'm still playing Perfect Dark Zero, primarily for the achievement points. Received Fuzion Frenzy 2 in the mail. I doubt it will be very good, but you never know. Two days of 300 (for the PSP) have me entertained but no more than Eragon or TMNT. The voice work is laughable.

Downloaded Aegis Wing & Solitaire from XBLA. Aegis Wing is good for free but not likely to bump Pinball or Astropop from my current favorite arcade titles. At 800 points, Solitaire is just not worth the price.

Beck is still playing (and kicking my ass) in Astropop. Too bad she beat Me and My Katamri yesterday because she's run out of new games to play.

Game Reviews...

My goal is to blog daily about the games I'm playing and what I think of them. Kind of like capsule reviews...
